Plans d'eau du Genevray - Thézillieu

There are two artificial ponds at Genevray, a hamlet of THEZILLIEU. These were originally dug in 1234, for the Cistercian Abbey of Saint-Sulpice, In 1974 they were restored as part of the SIVOM project.

The Association for the Exploitation of the Genevray Ponds has been responsible for their maintenance since 1962. For nearly half a century there has been fishing at THEZILLIEU, for carp, pike, roach, rudd, bream, tench and perch, all quality fresh water fish.

Fishing permits can be obtained on site, from the Fishing Wardens.

Members of the Fishing Club take a close interest in all environmental decisions, and insist that everyone respects the plant and trees around the edges of ponds, and the fish species or aquatic plants in the water.

Both ponds are a respectable size. The lower pond, just above the waterfall, is 2.7 hectares and the large pond pond has a surface

Every year, a team of fifteen men and women help keep the premises in perfect condition. The District Council maintains the edges of ponds and is currently working on a project to provide access for people with reduced mobility.
